Michael Laurence Campbell took off running early Sunday morning after speeding his car into traffic light near a highway exit ramp in northeast Minneapolis, according to Hennepin County prosecutors. He left behind his girlfriend, a 20-year-old St. Thomas student, who was crushed by the impact and died on scene.
He also left behind his wallet.
Investigators identified Campbell, 21, and tracked him to a residence in Wright County two days later, where police brought him to the hospital for a routine checkup and then to jail. Prosecutors charged him Wednesday with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, each carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
